The Indiana Area School District Board of School Directors consists of nine members who are elected from the community at large.  Board members are dedicated volunteers who are not compensated for attendance at meetings or other activities.  They serve for four-year terms.  The terms of four school directors end in December 2009.  The terms of five school directors end in December 2011.

    Board Meetings:

Business meetings are held at 7:30 p.m. on the second Monday of each month unless otherwise noted.  Special curriculum meetings are held the fourth Monday of each month.  Meetings are held in the Conference Room at the Administrative Office at 501 East Pike in Indiana unless otherwise noted.  The dates are listed in the districtís calendar of events, which is published at the beginning of each school year.  Additionally, public notice is given before all school board meetings.

Meetings follow an agenda that is developed by the Superintendent in consultation with the President of the Board.  Copies of the agenda are provided to visitors.  At times, it may seem like the Board is covering a large portion of the agenda in a short period of time.  This is because some matters may be routine, requiring little or no discussion or because the topic has been discussed in depth at either a prior public meeting or a closed executive session.  Closed session topics are limited to:  confidentiality, labor, employee, attorney/advisor, and real estate matters.

Motions require a different number of votes depending on the nature of the motion:  a) majority of members present, (b) 2/3 of full number of school directors, or (c) majority of full number of school directors.  For example, approving the budget, appointing teachers, or adopting textbooks require the majority of the full number of school directors.

If you wish to speak at a Board Meeting:

    The Board is interested in hearing the views of the public, whether expressed in the forum of the School Board meeting or in writing.  Board policy provides fifteen (15) minutes for residents of the district to address the Board.  Time is provided at the beginning of the meeting for comments pertaining to agenda items and at the end of the meeting for general comments on other issues.

If you wish to speak at a meeting:

  • Submit your name, address, and subject of comment to the Board President or Board Secretary prior to the beginning of the meeting.
  • All questions and comments shall be addressed directly to the Board President, not to individual board members.
  • Keep your comments brief and relevant.  Speak only once on a topic unless all others who wish to speak on that topic have been heard.
  • A calm and dignified presentation will aid in maintaining focus and mutual understanding on a particular issue.
  • Matters raised will be taken under consideration and referred to the administration for further study and recommendation.  The Board believes it is important to investigate matters before establishing or changing policy.

The Board President shall, within his or her discretion:

  • Interrupt a speaker if statements become too lengthy or personally directed.
  • Call a recess or adjournment if lack of public decorum so warrants.
  • Request any individual who disrupts the agenda to leave the meeting.
