Mission
The mission of the IASD reading program is to provide all students with an engaging learning environment rooted in the scientific evidence of reading best practices, which includes high-quality instruction in oral language, phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and reading comprehension.
Vision
The vision of the IASD reading program is to demonstrate fidelity to the core reading program by providing scientifically-based reading instruction and expecting reading proficiency for ALL students.
According to the Nation’s Reading Report Card, only 35% of 4th-grade students across the nation demonstrate proficient reading skills as measured by the National Assessment of Educational Progress reading assessment. This finding has been consistent for years with a lack of significant growth in reading achievement since 1992. Pennsylvania fell slightly above the national average with 40% of 4th-grade students demonstrating proficient reading skills. Click here to learn more about State Achievement-Level Results.
In 2002, the National Reading Panel conducted an evidence-based assessment of the scientific research on reading and the implications for reading instruction. The report is available in its entirety here.
In IASD, early reading instruction and achievement became critically important when universal screening measures suggested approximately 40% of students in grades K-2 were falling below benchmark according to DIBELS Next data.
